Portable workstation

I’ve been thinking about switching workstation for a while now. I’m currently working on a 24″ iMac that really does the trick. My only problem with it is that it’s a stationary computer and that means that the portabillity is zero.

I love the idea to be able to sit down in a café working on a project or to actually be able to get some work done at my girlfriends place{1}.

Applying to Hyper Island also made me think about my workstation. Getting accepted into that school means moving back to my parents{2} and travel for school every day. And that means losing at least 2 hours of work per day on the train.

The new Macbooks might be the answer I’m looking for. I’m particularly intrested in the 13″, 2,4 GHz Macbook, mostly because of the price versus prestanda{3}.

So, I’m thinking about selling my iMac to afford a Macbook, but it still feels like a bad affair considering the specs and screen size. I guess I could use some help setting my mind straight. Any ideas?

  1. Even though I consider it to be a “work-free environment”.
  2. They live several hours away (travelling by train).
  3. It acutally costs almost as much as my current iMac. Is that the price for portabillity?

Nuh-uh. I wouldn’t. You will grow to know the limitations of a 13″ monitor all too well in this profession. I wouldn’t settle for anything lower than 15″.

Also, if your education is likely to involve a sizeable amount of print design I’d consider a MacBook Pro. During my past two years at Westerdals School of Communication, I’ve noticed that fellow students who opted for the MacBook have been less than impressed with its performance with larger print documents. That spinning beach-ball is a creativity killer.

I really miss those circles, by the way – grunge is nice, but those circles really set heartworker apart. :-)

I’ve been thinking about the MBP too, but I think it’s a bit too expensive considering the fact that it only brings up the screensize 2″. Though it is a big difference between 13″ and 15″ when it comes to working-space.

I changed back to the circles, but I’m working on a better background that I’ll finish once I’m done with some projects I got going.

    Hi Joel,

I had a similar situation myself a little over two years ago. I even wrote about it much like yourself. I’m happy to say that I am still loving working with a Macbook Pro, and using an external monitor when I need the extra screen real estate.

    Good luck!

Well mate, size matters! despite both machines can do the same tasks under same amount of time, I believe, as you are a print oriented guy, these 11″ will be missed… all of them… Trust me, you’ll feel caged under macbook. Try to save some more before sale your iMac and grab a macbook pro. still, 15″ looks ridiculous small close to your 24″. As Kyle said, you can always have a macbook and a external 22″ / 22″ display and deal with small screen just in some situations.

Kyle Meyer; I read your post and you have me convinced. I tought about selling some stuff to afford the Macbook Pro but still keep my iMac for the screensize (and better prestanda), but a big monitor makes so much more sense keeping all the files on one computer.

Marcos Cerutti; Long time no see, Marcos! As I mentioned, the big screen seems very promising, and I really feel like missing out on the portabillity, so the MBP feels like the perfect solution.
